AI Advertising (GEA): The Complete Guide for Brands (2026)
ChatGPT Ads is open across Europe, Google is putting ads in AI Mode. Formats, targeting, costs, differences with classic search ads: the complete GEA guide for 2026.
Advertising followed the questions
Information search is shifting to AI assistants, and advertising is following. In 2026, AI advertising went from concept to real channel: ChatGPT has been showing ads across Europe since late summer, Google is integrating ad formats into AI Mode, and the ecosystem is organizing itself around new ad platforms, new formats and new rules. This guide covers the whole subject: what GEA is, where it shows up, how it differs from classic search advertising, what a campaign costs, and above all in what order to proceed so you ride this shift to your advantage instead of being caught by it.
What is AI advertising (Generative Engine Advertising)?
AI advertising, often called Generative Engine Advertising (GEA), refers to the ad placements displayed in the interface of generative answer engines. Instead of appearing above a list of links, as in classic search, the ad sits alongside the conversational answer the user is reading, and it is clearly identified as sponsored.
It is the logical extension of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), which concerns organic visibility in AI answers. GEO is about being cited naturally in the answers; GEA is about buying a placement next to them. Both respond to the same reality: more and more purchase decisions start with a question asked to an AI, not with a traditional Google search. And one boundary separates them, on which every serious player is categorical: the organic recommendation cannot be bought. OpenAI states it in black and white: ads are separate from answers and do not influence them. A brand absent from the answers stays absent from the answers, even when paying; the ad compensates part of the lost exposure, it does not replace the citation.
ChatGPT Ads: where does advertising on ChatGPT stand?
OpenAI opened advertising in ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026, then launched a self-service Ads Manager in the spring. On August 18, 2026, the program expanded to 31 European markets, including France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and since August 31 self-service access via the Ads Manager has been open to advertisers across all of these markets (official OpenAI announcement). Our detailed analysis of ChatGPT Ads has been following this story since the US launch; here are the structural characteristics for a brand.
Ads are contextual and conversational. They are displayed based on the topic of the conversation, the language and the user's general location. There is no keyword buying in the Google Ads sense: you describe your offer and your audiences, and the system decides relevance conversation by conversation.
They only reach users on free plans. Only Free and Go users see ads; paid plans (Plus, Pro, Enterprise) remain ad-free. This is an implicit targeting point to factor in: depending on your audience, part of your buyers will never see a ChatGPT ad.
They are labeled and separate from the answers. The ad appears clearly labeled as sponsored, below or next to the generated answer, and OpenAI commits to the separation between advertising and answer content, as well as to the confidentiality of conversations with respect to advertisers.
Advertiser tooling is maturing. The Ads Manager offers bidding options, geographic targeting, custom audiences (first-party data import) and conversion measurement via the OpenAI Pixel or third-party integrations. Creative generation can be AI-assisted.
What this changes for you: on a query like "what is the best tool for...", your brand can now be outpaced not only by a competitor better cited organically, but also by an advertiser who paid for a spot next to the answer. Measuring both planes becomes essential.
Beyond ChatGPT: the map of AI advertising surfaces
ChatGPT is not alone, and the logic differs from one player to the next.
Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. This is the heaviest move of 2026: Google is converging its generative results and its advertising ecosystem, where considerable budgets are already at stake. At Google Marketing Live in May 2026, Google confirmed the arrival of ads in AI Mode and presented Gemini-powered formats, including conversational ads that respond to the question asked and shopping formats that argue for the product query by query (official Google Marketing Live 2026 announcements). For advertisers, access goes through the existing Google Ads ecosystem, which makes it the most accessible GEA surface for teams already fluent in search advertising.
Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft relies on Bing's ad platform and inventory (Microsoft Advertising) to push formats into Copilot's answers. Here too, the entry point is a platform many teams already use.
Perplexity. The engine had explored sponsored formats as early as 2024, betting on source transparency, before stopping its advertising program in early 2026. The subject remains open, and illustrates a reality of GEA: surfaces appear, evolve and disappear fast.
Following a single engine is therefore not enough. AI advertising plays out across a set of surfaces with different bidding, format and targeting logics, and the landscape changes every quarter.
AI advertising vs classic search ads: the real differences
AI advertising does not replace Google Ads: it adds to it, with rules of its own. Four differences matter for your strategy.
An answer, not a list. In classic search, the user sees several ads and several links, and attention is spread out. In AI, they read a single synthetic answer, with at best one sponsored placement next to it. The space is scarcer, therefore structurally more contested as advertisers arrive.
Contextual targeting, not keywords. The ad is triggered by the intent expressed in the conversation, not by an isolated keyword. A conversation about renovating a bathroom can trigger a tools ad without the user ever typing "drill". This changes the craft: you no longer build keyword lists, you describe contexts and audiences.
A user in answer mode, not comparison mode. The person reading an AI answer has already received an organic recommendation. The ad arrives as a complement or a counterpoint to that recommendation: its effectiveness depends on what the answer itself says, which has no equivalent in classic search advertising.
A direct link with organic. This is the consequence of the three previous points, and the most frequent finding of our audits: paid AI makes the most sense where your organic visibility is weak, and it is largely redundant where you are already systematically cited. AI advertising is therefore steered alongside your visibility monitoring, not in isolation.
What it costs, and why the window is now
The terrain is emerging: on many topics, particularly B2B and non-English markets, few advertisers have positioned themselves, and the bidding mechanisms still play out with low competition. This is precisely the window to take position at lower cost, test the formats and learn, before bids rise the way they have on every emerging advertising channel before this one. The history of search advertising is the reminder: advertisers who learned Google Ads when clicks were cheap built a durable advantage over those who arrived when everything was expensive.
But to decide where to invest, you first need to see the landscape: which questions trigger ads on your topics, who is bidding, what the organic answers next to them say, and where you are weak. Without that snapshot, you are flying blind on a channel that moves every month.
The right sequence: measure, target, invest, prove
The temptation is to spend first and measure later. The right sequence is the opposite, in four steps.
1. Measure your organic visibility. On your strategic questions, engine by engine: where you are cited, where your competitors are, with the GEO KPIs (citation rate, share of voice, accuracy). This is the map that reveals where paid makes sense.
2. Cross organic with the advertising landscape. Three zones appear: the questions where you are well cited (paid is redundant there, except to defend a hotly contested position); the questions where you are absent and the organic answer can be worked on (GEO first, more durable and with no cost per click); and the questions where organic is locked up by others or too slow to conquer, the zone where GEA is most profitable.
3. Invest in a targeted way. Small budgets, precise contexts, creatives aligned with what the organic answer already says. On ChatGPT Ads, leverage conversational targeting rather than transposing your search campaigns as they are: it is a different channel, not an extension of Google Ads.
4. Prove and adjust. Track conversions (pixel, integrations), but also the evolution of your organic visibility on the same questions: the right scenario is the one where GEO progresses and makes paid less and less necessary on each conquered question. This loop, measure then act then prove, is what separates a mastered AI advertising strategy from mere spending.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is GEA? Generative Engine Advertising refers to the ad placements displayed in the interfaces of AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Copilot), clearly labeled as sponsored and distinct from the generated answer. It complements GEO, which targets organic citation in the answers themselves.
Is ChatGPT advertising available in Europe? Yes. Since August 18, 2026, ChatGPT Ads covers 31 European markets including France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and the self-service Ads Manager has been open across them since August 31. Ads are only shown to users on the Free and Go plans.
Can you buy your place in ChatGPT's answers? No. Ads are separate from the answers and do not influence them, a commitment OpenAI makes explicitly. Presence in the answer itself remains organic and is built through GEO.
Should you do GEA if you are already well cited organically? Rarely as a priority. Paid AI is most profitable on the questions where your organic visibility is weak and hard to conquer. Where you are already cited, it is largely redundant; measure first, the map decides.
Will GEA replace Google Ads? No, it adds to it. Google is in fact integrating its AI formats into its own advertising ecosystem: classic search budget and GEA budget will converge in the same consoles, but with different targeting logics.
How do you get started concretely? With measurement: establish your organic visibility and the competitive landscape on your 20 to 30 strategic questions, across several engines. Then invest in the weak, high-stakes zones with a test budget, and track conversions and citation rate in parallel.
Conclusion
AI advertising is no longer a hypothesis: it is an open channel, in Europe as in the major markets, with its ad platforms, its formats and its first references. Its particularity is that it cannot be steered alone: every euro or dollar of GEA is decided against your organic visibility, because the ad lives next to an answer that cannot be bought. The subject evolves fast, and we will keep this guide updated as the platforms and formats evolve. To get the map that precedes any investment decision, the free Sapian Metrics audit measures your organic visibility across 8 engines, including ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, against your competitors.
